How has this person violated their right to freedom of speech exactly? This sounds like a huge overreaction to me and somewhat of a witch hunt.

It’s not freedom of speech to post a private individual’s personal information, such as their full first and last names, over the internet without their consent.

Offering $60.00 for the name of this individual is not an overreaction. It is a legitimate free market solution to a problem. It is a very viable solution, because I know that there are some very computer-savvy people on my campus who can find an individual’s name given their IP address The administration is very busy, and in order to deal with claims such as mine, they will have to have a name, an IP address, and screenshots of the incident in hand before they even consider prosecution.

Patriot, if you don’t agree with me, ask a lawyer.
Maliciously giving out someone’s personal information over the internet, which includes their full first & last name in order to intimidate them is absolutely inexcusable. I don’t know why you’d even try to defend something like this.

1. If this person is on your campus, all an IP address will tell you is that they’re on your campus. You won’t get a home (or dorm) address unless they’ve set up a static IP. Your school has what, *********** students? Good luck narrowing it down. I think you’re better off spending your energy elsewhere.

2. Giving out someone’s personal information over the internet is a mean and nasty thing to do, but I’m pretty sure it is legal. Can you cite case law or statute which says otherwise?

Luke: They do indeed have a static IP system set up. Some very computer savvy people have “cracked the code” and are able to link IP addresses to names.

Luke: Actually Mark, I think you’re right. I know it’s illegal to put people’s bank account numbers and stuff like that on the internet, but maybe you’re right about names. But he’s still screwed. If it’s legal for him to find out my full name and post it on the internet, then it’s legal for me to find out his full name and post it on the internet, too.

Mark, believe it or not you were almost dead on with your estimate of how many people go to the school. In fact, I had to edit out the number of students at the school from your comment because it might be possible for someone to come on here and google it along with the other tidbits of information about it that I’ve put on here about the school and get the name of the school.
